The shafts were originally made with the tip designed as part of the shaft. It was metal flanges welded onto the end of the shaft. If the flange broke, this meant that you had to replace the entire shaft.
The newer design made the flanged tip a seperate, plastic piece 39A-4300. This means the shaft no longer has to be replaced if the tip breaks.
