The first run reels of the SSm design, contained a crosswind block with an extra hole drilled in the upper center of the groove where the reel shaft sits, which screwed directly into the shaft itself. This design was unstable, putting too much pressure on the shaft. Newer versions of the reel will contain the original design from the older SS reels: the crosswind block with crosswind plate, secured with two screws.

Notes For Ordering

If you are replacing the older 43-750M crosswind block (with extra hole and single screw) with the 43N-750M block, you will also need to order the crosswind block plate 43A-750 (Qty 1) and crosswind block screws 44-750 (Qty 2).

If you still have a good 43-750M block, there is no need to change it - just add the crosswind block plate and crosswind block screws for added strength. Leave in the center screw - without it, the shaft is weaker. Penn has redesigned the shafts so that they no longer have holes. Order crosswind block plate 43A-750 (Qty 1) and crosswind block screws 44-750 (Qty 2).
